Leading the charge to alter the state constitution to restrict marriage in Massachusetts to one man and one woman is none other than the Governor, Mitt Romney. Mitt's a Mormon (one of the many splinter sects of christianity). You remember the Mormons, right? They're the group that triggered the passage of the original federal (and many state) marriage laws in the first place because of that whole polygamy thing...
This could just be ~150 years of payback, I suppose. (I'm not sure that getting the support of gay groups in the 1800s would've done much for their cause)

Posted by: Andrew Sweger at February 12, 2004 09:14 AMCorrection, Dan: Mormonism is definitely not a "splinter sect of Christianity", except maybe to the Mormons. But I do see the irony of the situation ;)
Posted by: Lyle at February 12, 2004 09:47 AMLyle -
I'm confused - are you trying to imply that Mormons aren't Christian?
Posted by: Zach at February 12, 2004 10:29 AMOh, I dunno. That whole "Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints" thing'd argue towards being a splinter sect. But, then, from the outside they all look like splinter sects. (I was raised Methodist, another splinter sect, though it never did take...)
This isn't all about fear, though. It's actually something worse--it's discomfort. (Yeah, that is worse) It'd be funny to watch, if it wasn't both so tragic. I'd say it set such a bad precedent (having a constitutional amendment forbidding rights rather than guaranteeing them) but alas it's not the first time, though you'd figure we'd have learned from past tries.
Posted by: Dan at February 12, 2004 12:42 PMZach, that would be a "yes". For exhaustive discussions of why most Christians would agree, google for "Mormon Christian"; there's no point in rehashing those discussions here.
Posted by: Lyle at February 12, 2004 05:34 PMDan, your point about them all looking like splinter sects from the outside is well taken. It is definitely true that there are subtle, or not so subtle, differences between various Christian denominations. But as I noted in my response to Zach, there's plenty of writing on the Internet (and elsewhere) about why many Christians don't consider Mormonism to be merely another denomination of Christianity.
And belated apologies for temporarily swerving the discussion off topic ;)
Posted by: Lyle at February 12, 2004 05:46 PMLyle,
As a Mormon, I know that I'm a Christian. But you're right - there is no point in having that discussion here.
Posted by: Zach at February 12, 2004 06:22 PMLetting Christians defining the word "Christian" is like letting object-oriented programmers defining the word "object-oriented" -- everyone will think that the neighbour's language is not really compliant with the one true meaning of "object-orientation". http://use.perl.org/comments.pl?sid=18503&cid=28398
Posted by: rafael at February 13, 2004 02:37 AMrafael - that's actually a good point. It all comes down to definition. You can define Christianity down to the point where Mormons are excluded just as you can define "object-oriented-ness" to the point where perl is excluded. In both cases you would be wrong. :)
Posted by: Zach at February 13, 2004 10:32 AMFirst of all, I just want to say that I love reading about Parrot and the issues surrounding it, especially the "What the heck is:" columns. I would simply ask that as a technical blog, that you refrain from posting political/religious remarks.
I'm not debating your right to post them. It's your site. I just ask this small courtesy as a fellow technical professional who is interested in learning and sharing technical issues. Or at least have some sort of warning or alternate link so that those of us who wish to skip political messages may do so easily.
Thanks for listening.
Yeah! I'm with Jay on this one! Political discussions have no place here! How dare you waste our time with your opinions and asides? Stick to the topics we're PAYING you to blog about, dammit! We spend good money to read this blog, and we expect you to stick to the topics you agreed on in your original contract. Don't try to convince us you have opinions, or a life, outside those parameters. It's unprofessional and likely to get you sacked!
[pant pant pant]
In other words... please, please ignore Jay's silly little request, which is even sillier because it's connected to such an innocuous posting as this. It's your blog, so blog as you want to blog and don't be swayed by people who get nauseated by occasional glimpses of personality. If we don't like what you say we'll stop reading; if we do, we'll tell our friends. Easy!
Posted by: Eric TF Bat at February 15, 2004 11:57 PMI like catching a few of the author's thoughts about politics and religion as well. As a worst case they would at least broaden my views.
Posted by: Rat at February 16, 2004 09:49 AMI think the big problem is one of assumptions--you're assuming this is a technical blog. It isn't. What it is is, like so many other blogs (and so much of the web in general) an exercise in narcissistic exhibitionism that I'm doing for my own reasons. Oddly enough, despite the previous sentence, I'm not doing this for anyone but me so if I'm the only one who ever reads any of this, well, that's fine too.
The Parrot and WTHI stuff get thrown in their own categories, and the WTHI posts even have their own feed. (This is not new) Beyond, that, well... Cope. It's good for you. :)
Posted by: Dan at February 16, 2004 10:11 AMDan, well, you can take comfort that the churchy types believe in 'good' v. 'evil' and dumb things like satan and hell which, judging by the way most of them live is where they'll be headed when they die. I enjoy thinking about Mit Romney and the other insecure 'family values' folks who think in such narrow terms roasting in the eternal fires of damnation...even though I don't believe in that silly stuff, it's a nice thought. Of course, you should see how debased the Nordic countries are after 30 years or so of not batting an eye at married or unmarried couples of opposite or same sex. Of course, we get commercials in prime time with full frontal male and female nudity selling soup which would likely send the US into apoplectic shock so....perhaps the liberals should just relocate outside the us and leave the fundies to their own destruction.
Posted by: hfb at February 18, 2004 08:54 AMIdiocy and ignorance will reign supreme wherever you go for all time. Count yourselves blessed you live in a part of the world where this is even an issue. Most other places, you'd probably be killed or thrown in prison for even considering the possibility.
