Rising blog-spam

While it's sad, and more than a little pathetic, blog spam, like all the other sorts of spam, seems to be on the rise. I've been getting more and more comments posted that aren't anything more than links to some pill site or other. Having some of the antispam MT plugins helps, but still, there's a bunch I need to go hand-delete. (After which I generally IP-ban the poster, which has worked as well to cut down on the spam, though I worry about the collateral damage)

It's really sad, though. Yeah, it means more work for me, and more maintenance, which is annoying, but all this blog-spam seems to be manually entered. (Heck, someone went to the trouble of expressing sympathy for my dog, though I'm pretty sure Random doesn't really need a link to a rape porn site) You've really gotta wonder, how many of these links do you need to put in to make a buck, and is it really worth it?

Blog spam is mostly used to increase google page
ranks. That's because most blogware allows to post comments with plain links. If every blogware in widespread use started disallowing plain links in comments, that would make blog spam ineffective.
Here's a reference, which I'm going to post as plain text : http://simon.incutio.com/archive/2003/10/13/linkRedirects
