Both boys were born with the power to transform themselves into living, animate metal. In this form they were super-strong and virtually invulnerable. Unfortunately, they were also (by the standards of their era) horribly disfigured. Their mother, a popular TV actress and model, was unable to cope with the idea of her sons being "freaks," so she sent Andy and Dougie off to a "school" for "special" children with metahuman powers and inhuman appearances. Although it presented itself to the government and the families of the children as a caring group home, the "school" was actually a Dickensian nightmare were the children were forced to use their powers for the profit of the owner, and the most powerful bullies terrorized the less powered students. Andrew and Dougie were forced to wear full-face metal helmets to cover their faces, Because students were required to "earn their keep," Andrew became an accomplished tailor. Andrew escaped from the school during the "Final Night" crisis, and set out on a quixotic quest to find his mother (who he believed would welcome him and Dougie back into her home when she discovered what the actual conditions at the "school" were). During the crisis, he fell in with Superman and the time-stranded Legionnaires. Since the Legionnaires and Andy were all fending for themselves in a strange and uncaring world, they naturally gravitated together. When Andrew returned to the school to retreive Douglass, Dougie was killed by the other super-powered "students" of the ruling clique. With his brother dead, and having already realized that his mother was emotionally incapable of taking care of him, Andrew accepted Cosmic Boy's invitation to return to 30th Century and join the Legionnaires. Andrew had hoped that 30the century science could "cure" his appearance. However, it didn't prove to be so easy. By the standards of the polyracial UP, Andrew is not "disfigured" at all, he only possesses a non-standard appearance for his race (and would be considered quite handsome by many other races]. Unable to come up with any "cure" that was not worse than the "disease," the ethical physicians of the UP declined to take any action. Andrew is still considering the possibility of radical action (one possibility would involve him spending the rest of his life in metal form), but for now has decided to take his time. Andrew is still trying to come to grip with the fact that something he'd always regarded as a crippling handicap might, in the 30th century, be only a mild inconvenience (on 20th century Earth an unmasked Andrew would qualify for Appearance: Monstrous, in the 30th Century UP he barely qualifies for an Unusual Feature). Andrew is still rather in awe of the other Legionnaires. He looks upon Cosmic Boy as a mentor and personal hero. He had an unrequited crush on Inferno in the 20th century. The other Legionnaires recognize that Ferro is a particularly fragile personality and take pains to bolster his ego, particularly Triad, Spark and Cham. The exceptions to this attitude are Magno (who has little patience with Ferro's agonies over his appearance in light of his own recent losses) and Brainy (who has been known to callously use Ferro as a patsy.) Although not highly trained as a fighter, Ferro's main combat asset is a self-sacrificing nature that makes him totally fearless. His loyalty to his friends is absolutely complete and unquestioning. HELMET: Ferro's Helmet is made of ordinary forged and polished steel about 1/4" thick. It is made of two solid pieces of metal connected by a hinge and clasp. It protects his entire head with DR 2 and PD 1. It does not offer any DR against eye hits, but the PD does apply.
